The Tengger Caldera and Gunung (Mount) Bromo Situated at the eastern end of Java, the 16km-wide Tengger caldera (a caldera is a crater formed by the collapse of a magma chamber after an eruption) dates back about 820,000 years ago and consists of a number of stratovolcanoes and lava domes. Contained within it is the smoking Bromo volcano and above it rises Mount Semeru.
