Kit list

Notes from 'Playing with Fire' by Nick Langston-Able

"My packing skills had been refined by previous trips.  A rucksack should be able to: a) sit on your lap on a bus; b) fit through the window of a jeep; c) be light enough to carry for at least 40 minutes in equatorial heat.  I decided to take the absolute minimum; all of it contained in one medium rucksack (around 45 litres for those who care about such things) and one small rucksack (for day use) which just about fitted inside the bigger one.

The ‘sleeping bag’ was a scabby polycotton sheet which I had acquired from ‘Help the Aged’ for 50p and then sewn into a cocoon shape with yellow cotton; useful for keeping off bugs at night and avoiding whatever alien lifeforms that may be inhabiting the mattresses of the lesser Indonesian guesthouse.  Having the right kit for the job was clearly important.

My life was now reduced to 18 Kilos of personal items and the contents of my head."
